Monday Started out with fairly comfortable conditions and sunny skies.

Temperature and humidity will be on the rise Monday and it will probably turn out to be the least comfortable day of the week.

The morning surface map details a trough over Maryland and an approaching cool front over the Great Lakes. The trough roughly delineates higher dewpoint readings to the east and lower dewpoints to the west. A trough often can be a focal point for thunderstorm activity but today, the Great Lakes front will likely be the storm generator Monday afternoon and evening.

The Storm Prediction Center has identified most of Maryland as having a slight chance for the development of severe storms.

Heat and humidity will be the most notable weather features on Monday

High temperatures are expected to be well into the 90s across the region. Humidity levels will make it feel more like the low 100s. Additionally, pollution levels will result in reduced air quality.

Monday’s hottest temperatures will be in the Plains states where 100+ temperatures will be widespread.

In the tropics, a wave in the Atlantic has been showing signs of development for several days.

As of Monday morning the cluster of thunderstorms was several hundred miles away from the easternmost Caribbean Islands and moving to the west-northwest. An Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft was investigating the storm Monday morning. It is highly likely that this storm will be upgraded to a tropical depression or tropical storm. Its’ name would be Emily. Forecast models show a range of track possibilities moving west-northwestward along or just north of the Caribbean Islands over the next few days. Longer range computer models indicate a potential for the storm to approach the Bahamas by the end of the week and  Florida by the end of the weekend.
