U.S. Tornado Statistics

The National Weather Service has released preliminary statistics for the deadly 2011 tornado season so far:  Tornado Stats.  The Joplin, MO tornado was upgraded to an EF-5 storm (highest on the scale), with winds estimated in excess of 200 mph.  The Joplin tornado now ranks as the single deadliest tornado in U.S. history since official National Weather Service statistics began in 1950; an estimated 123 people lost their lives in that tornado.  Sadly, two of the tornadoes from the April 27th outbreak in Alabama also rank in the top 7 deadliest tornadoes on record.
