December Deep Freeze

Everyone remembers last December through February as one of the harshest winters on record, but those memories are primarilly because of the heavy snowfall, and that didn’t really kick in until the 18th and 19th of December.  In fact, the first 9 days of December 2009 were rather mild, with an average temperature of 41.0° and a record amount of rain on the 9th (1.41″).  The first 9 days of this December have actually been much colder than last year, with an average temperature of just 34.0°, although we still have not had any snow at BWI-Marshall.  By the way, technically, what we are experiencing is a rather cold end to autumn because winter doesn’t officially begin until 6:38 p.m. on December 21st.
