Western Blizzard May Impact Holiday Travel

The satellite image above shows a powerful blizzard blasting into the Rocky Mountain west today.  It is expected to track across the northern plains on Wednesday. The storm is forecast to drop 6-10″ of snow in the Salt Lake City area today and tonight, with wind gusts to 55 mph. Over 20″ of snow is likely in the mountains around Salt Lake City with blizzard warnings posted from western Montana through eastern Idaho, into most of Utah and western Colorado. The most severe part of this storm should avoid other major airports through tonight, tracking north and west of Denver. By Wednesday afternoon, however, it may greet travelers with snow in Minneapolis and a wintry mix changing to rain in Chicago. East of Chicago much better travel conditions are expected on Wednesday with only a few scattered snow showers in the mountains of New England and a few rain showers around Atlanta. West of Salt Lake City travel conditions should also be favorable on Wednesday.
