Final Numbers for Storm 2

The third major storm of this winter season put us over the top.

The striking satellite image above was transmitted Thursday afternoon. There are no political boundaries on this version but if you look carefully you can see the snow on the ground stretching from  around Lake Michigan, eastward to the Mid Atlantic region. Clouds over Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky obscure some of the snow band. River valleys are easily identified cutting through the snowpack. The snow over the Mid Atlantic region was first laid down last weekend with the most recent storm adding to it.

Snow records for Baltimore have been established on several levels. The numbers are below.

4.0”   Feb 9 snow

15.5”  Feb 10 snow … New Record

19.5”  Storm Total

23.2”  Dec 2009 snow total … New Record … 21.5” above normal

7.5”    Jan 2010 snow total … .5” above normal

49.2”  Feb 2010 snow total … New Record … 46.4” above normal

79.9”  2009-2010 season total so far …  New Record … 67.8” above normal

62.5”  Old season record snow total (1995-96)

18.2”  Normal season total snow (1971-2000)

Below is a is a series of maps showing the snow accumulations for the most recent storm as compiled by National Weather Service offices in Sterling VA, Mt Holley NJ, Wakefieled VA and State College PA. There are also two National Weather Service maps for regional and national snow depth as of Friday. Note the extensive snow cover across the entire U.S. Also below, a listing of snow reports from around the region as compiled by the National Weather Service.

  1. John, Tom, Tony or whoever wants to answer this question. If the NAO is in a negative phase, why isn’t the southern storm going to turn up the coast? The early week clipper- Does that have a chance of getting stronger when it hits the coast and giving us more big snows (6+) since the trend has been to get more snow than forecasted
    Thanks-Dino-Pasadena Md

  2. Also take a look at the HPC storm totals from around the entire US for this system:

THIS RECENT STORM HAS PUSHED THE FOLLOWING CITIES TO NEW SEASONAL
    SNOWFALL RECORDS.

LOCATION OLD RECORD AND YEAR / NEW RECORD

    BALTIMORE, MD 62.5 INCHES 1995-1996/ 79.9 INCHES
WASHINGTON, DC (DULLES) 61.9 INCHES 1995-1996/ 72.8 INCHES
    WILMINGTON, DE 55.9 INCHES 1995-1996/ 66.7 INCHES
WASHINGTON, DC (NATIONAL) 54.4 INCHES 1898-1899/ 55.9 INCHES
    PHILADELPHIA, PA 65.5 INCHES 1995-1996/ 71.6 INCHES

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ 46.9 INCHES 1966-1967/ 49.9 INCHES

AS THE DEEP LOW CONTINUES TO MOVE RAPIDLY OFFSHORE…THE REMAINING
PRECIPITATION OVER NEW ENGLAND WILL COME TO AN END. STRONG GUSTY
WINDS BLOWING ON TOP OF THE SNOW PACK COULD INITIALLY CREATE
BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF THE SNOW. BUT AS THE LOW MOVES
AWAY…WINDS SHOULD CONTINUE TO SUBSIDE THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

THIS WILL BE THE LAST STORM SUMMARY ISSUED BY THE
HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER FOR THIS EVENT. PLEASE REFER
TO YOUR LOCAL NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE FOR ADDITIONAL
    INFORMATION.
