Post Storm Snow Numbers

The image above is the Sunday, visible satellite picture of the snow cover over the Mid Atlantic Region from the February 5-6 storm. Clouds cover portions of West Virginia, New York and the Atlantic Ocean. The rest of the white shading is snow.

The image below displays selected snow accumulations reported to the National Weather Service.

Note the highest numbers in eastern Howard County. This was an area of predawn, convective snow-burst activity with thunder and lightening.

The National Weather Service reported that the storm’s snow accumulation total at BWI-Marshall Airport was 24.8 inches, a new record for a “two day” storm. The following display some of the other numbers regarding this most recent snow and its’ relationship to other storms in Baltimore’s history.

Note the this 2009-2010 snow season has recorded two 20+ inch snow storms, the only time that has happed since weather records have been kept for the city.

All of the numbers regarding these most recent storms and their subsequent ranking in history are preliminary and will be evaluated by the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, North Carolina.

Listed below is a summary of storm reports released by the National Weather Service.

  1. Some of them totals don’t seem right. I live in Federal hill/Riverside in South Baltimore, and I got 26.6 inches on a flat area that was untouched by wind or people. I know totals vary from area to area.
