One of the Wettest

With another inch of rain today, we set a record for the wettest December in Baltimore and enter the final week of 2009 inching up the list of all-time wettest years in Baltimore.  Since official records began back in 1871, only five years have been wetter than 2009.  Here are the soggy details:

December 2009: 8.06″ of precipitation…old record:  7.44″ in 1969

Wettest Years in Baltimore:

2003:  62.66″

1889:  62.35″

1979:  58.98″

1996:  58.31″

1952:  56.57″

2009:  55.57″

It is interesting to note, and probably not just a coincidence, that big snows fell in most of these soggy years; the biggest all-time snowstorm in February of 2003, the President’s Day blizzard of 1979, the blizzard in January of 1996 and the big snow just last week.
