Correction: 8th Coolest July Since 1871

Oops!  My eyes missed the cool July of 1984 (73.9)…with that year in the list we slip down one notch.  Here’s the original post, with the correction:

Even with normal to above normal temperatures for the last 10 days of the month, July 2009 goes into the record books tied for the 8th coolest July since official National Weather Service records began in Baltimore back in 1871. The average monthly temperature for the ten coolest Julys ever:

1.  1891 … 71.6

2.  2000 … 72.7

3.  2001 … 72.8

4.   1895 … 73.1

5.  1962 … 73.6

6.  1984 … 73.9

7.  1996 … 74.3

8.  2009, 1960, 1888  … 74.6

11. 1956 and 1886  … 74.7

It is also interesting to note that three of the coolest Julys on record have occurred since 2000.

And, for the first time since 2004, we have had cooler than normal temperatures for the first two months of summer; June this year was 0.4 degrees below normal and July was 1.9 degrees below normal.

For the year as a whole, 2009 temperatures are now running just a shade below normal.  Through the end of July, the  average temperature for Baltimore this year is now 53.5, which is 0.2 degrees below the normal of 53.7.
