Coldest Temperature In 12 Years

A quick scan through the climate books shows that this morning’s low temperature of +2 at BWI-Thurgood Marshall airport was the coldest there since January 1997.  In that month 12 years ago, the Baltimore area experienced a week-long stretch of cold weather in which 6 of 7 days from the 14th through the 20th had low temperatures in the single digits, the coldest being a reading of +1 on January 19, 1997.  Surprisingly, even with that week of very cold weather, the month of January 1997 as a whole, ended up with an average temperature of 32.8, which is half a degree warmer than normal.

With this morning’s frigid temperature and a cold afternoon high of just 21, we’ve had six straight days of below normal temperatures and the average for the first 17 days of the month is now just 29.8, putting us 2.5 degrees below the January normal.

Some unofficial temperatures recorded around the state were even colder, with some spots dropping below zero, a very unusual occurrence in the absence of snow cover east of the mountains…
