Winter Behaves Like Winter This Season

Cold air has really settled in and for a change it really feels like winter in the region. The only missing element so far is snow in the metropolitan area. A number of storms have moved through but temperatures at the time were too warm and they have been mostly rain makers with a little ice and sleet thrown in.

The weather pattern has been generous with snowfall elsewhere around the nation.

Numerous storms coming off the Pacific or coming out of Canada have piled up the snow from the Pacific Northwest, across the Northern Plains and Great Lakes, into New England.

Arctic air will be pushing into the eastern U.S. this week and several “Alberta Clippers” will be riding in with it. Clippers are generally not big snow producers this far east so the result will be unseasonably cold temperatures and the chance for a brief rain shower or wintry mix on Tuesday and some snow showers on Thursday.

Longer range computer models indicate that there may be a chance for flurries or snow showers in Pittsburgh on Sunday when the Ravens play the Steelers. The models also have been showing an increasingly higher chance for a more significant storm developing in the region early next week. Depending on timing, always a problem with long range models, this could have an impact on the Inauguration in Washington. This is far from a firm forecast so stay tuned for updates.
