13th Wettest September

Baltimore's Wettest Septembers

With another round of showers and thunderstorms in the final hours of September 2008, the monthly rainfall total at BWI-Marshall Airport (Baltimore’s official weather station), climbed to 7.22″.  That makes this the 13th wettest September on record.  To me, that qualifies as a “soggy September”, but loyal WBAL-TV viewer John S. White disagrees.  He reminded me that most of the rain came with two wet periods at the beginning of the month (1.72″ Sept. 5-6) and the end of the month (4.81″ Sept. 25-30), with a twelve day dry spell in between.  So, I suppose we can say this was a soggy September in spite of a mid-month drought.  Interestingly, three of the 13 wettest Septembers have occurred since 2003:  7.56″ in 2006 ranks 10th, 7.47″ in 2003 ranks 11th and 7.22″ this year ranks 13th.
