GOES Satellite Update

Problems continue with the GOES-12 weather satellite that provides weather images and data for the eastern half of the U.S. On tuesday engineers were performing an orbit adjustment when the satellite “experienced an anomaly in its attitude”. Attempts to restore GOES-12 to normal operation have been unsuccessful up until now. NOAA states that the satellite is “safe” and attempts will be made during the evening hours to get the satellite back on track.

GOES-10 has been pressed into service to cover the eastern U.S. This satellite has been used most recently to cover the western hemisphere with an emphasis on South America.

NOAA’s newest satellite, GOES-13, has been parked in a storage orbit.
