Felix Weakens Slightly…Aims For Central America

Hurricane Felix weakened to a category 4 hurricane as of Monday’s 2:00pm EDT advisory from the National Hurricane Center. The storm was a category 5 hurricane from 8:00pm EDT Sunday until 2:00pm EDT Monday, a total of 18 hours. The hurricanes remaining at category 5 for the longest time in the Atlantic basin were:

Allen (1980): 3.0 Days
Dog (1950) : 2.5 Days
Isabel (2003): 1.75 Days
Mitch (1998) : 1.75 Days
David (1979) : 1.75 Days

Late Monday evening Felix was maintaining category 4 status with maximum sustained surface winds near 135 mph. Felix is headed for landfall near the Nicaragua-Honduras border Tuesday morning and is expected to remain an extremely dangerous category 4 or 5 storm.
