Interesting Tropical Weather

Tropical cyclones (hurricanes) are not unusual in the Indian Ocean but they rarely take aim on the Arabian Penninsula. This week a storm of record strength made landfall on Oman. It is officially known as “Super Cyclonic Storm Gonu”. The storm will go down in the record books as the strongest tropical cyclone to enter the Arabian Sea and is tied for the second strongest storm to move through the northern Indian Ocean. At its’ peak, winds hit 160 mph with gusts to 195 mph.

The pictures of the storm are from NASA’s Aqua and Terra satellites and were provided courtesy of StormCenter Communications, Inc.
