Storm Moves East, Cold Lurking West

As the low pressure system that just brushed the region with a light wintry mix this morning moves farther off shore, all weather-watching eyes will turn west toward an approaching arctic air mass. Another round of rain and snow showers will accompany the front as it moves through central Maryland this afternoon and evening. A second cold front dropping south from Canada into the upper midwest today, will arrive in Maryland on Sunday, ushering in the coldest air since January 2005. Nighttime temperatures next week could dip into the single digits with afternoon highs struggling to reach the low 20s. The deep freeze may produce some Groundhog’s Day skeptics since that famous woodchuck named Phil up in Punxsutawney, PA didn’t see his shadow this morning, which according to groundhog legend, means an early spring. Hmmm…no sign of spring just yet.
