Arctic Air On the Move

The bitterly cold arctic air that has been building up in northern Canada and Alaska for the past month as made a move south into the lower 48 states. Temperatures early Friday morning dropped to frigid levels across much of the upper Midwest, the northern Rockies and the west coast states.

Friday Morning Lows:
West Yellowstone MT: -51
Stanley, ID: -35
Butte, MT: -25
Devils Lake, ND: -24

Freezing temperatures swept into California as well with some of the coldest air since December of 1998 being reported in the San Joaquin Valley, along with snow in the mountains of southern California:

Fresno, CA: 25
Bakersfield, CA: 25
Hanford, CA: 20

This arctic air is expected to slowly ooze to the east creating icy and snowy conditions from Chicago to St. Louis and south into Dallas this weekend. Here in Maryland, we’ll stay on the warm side of the front through most of Monday, but Monday night the front is expected to push toward the coast with temperatures falling during the day Tuesday. The coldest air of winter so far looks to be headed this way for the middle of next week.
